Guidelines for contributors

Read these before submitting. They answer most of what is usually asked, and they will tell you quickly whether an article is for us.

What we publish

Articles on the western predictive tradition. Within that, we welcome:

• the exposition or discussion of a technique;
• the study of an ancient or early modern author;
• the practical application of traditional technique, worked on a real chart;
• the history of astrological practice, from documents.

We do not publish modern technique, general interest pieces, or articles whose argument depends on a system outside the tradition.

What an article must contain

• Sourced chart data. The document the time comes from, and its reliability. A rectified time may be used if the rectification is shown and the original is given.
• Visible reasoning. Which testimonies produced which statement — including those that pointed the other way. An article that reports only supporting testimony has removed the part a reader can learn from.
• References. Author, work, book and chapter, and the edition or translation used. Where the sources disagree, say so rather than settling it silently.

How submissions are handled

• We notify authors whose articles are accepted. We do not send rejections individually.
• An accepted article that needs editing to meet our criteria is edited and returned to the author for agreement before publication.
• Acceptance does not guarantee a particular issue, or any issue.
• The editors' decision is final.

Deadlines

15 January for the spring issue, 15 July for the autumn issue. These are adhered to strictly.
