About the journal
the Tradition is devoted to the research and the application of western traditional astrology. By that we mean the practice from the Hellenistic period — including what it inherited from Babylonian sources — down to the seventeenth century.
What we set out to do
- Reassemble a scattered literature. The material survives in fragments across several languages and manuscript traditions. Bringing pieces of it together, properly referenced, is slow and unglamorous work that almost nobody funds.
- Publish research that has nowhere else to go. An article on a single technique in a single author is too narrow for a general astrological magazine and not academic in form. It is exactly what this journal exists for.
- Hold a standard of referencing. Every claim about what an author says carries the citation. Every chart carries the source of its data. This is ordinary scholarly practice and it is startlingly rare in astrological publishing.
Who it is for
Readers who already practise, or who are studying seriously and want to see how a judgement is actually built. We do not explain the basics, and we assume the reader can follow a chart.
